Recover Deleted Media and Files

noorbeast — Sat, 2010-06-26 19:23

I am sure we have all done it, that moment of dread when you hit delete, only to find something important is now gone. First rule, don't panic, in most cases the data can be recovered, and while it can take a little while, and uses the command line, it is actually pretty simple.

To recover deleted files try photorec, just follow the directions here: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntucat/recoverdeletedfiles/

Photorec works a treat, it recovers media like videos, all image formats, deb, exe, txt, zip and rar files. To really test it I also reformatted the drive with gparted after first deleting some files and photorec was still able to recover the deleted files from the now seemingly empty drive.

That is really handy!
